Gary Brickman — Our Own Little BIG Man
Cherry & Luis Pasamba, 12 July 2000

We hadn’t known Gary Brickman too long nor were we close friends with him in the sense most of you are. We did share a friendship, unconventional though it was… My husband and I met Gary through our friends Matt Levine and David Adams only about over a year ago. During that time, we hosted a weekly potluck between our respective homes on Wednesday nights, where we chatted over red wine (lots of it) and ate home cooked meals as a prelude to the real event of the evening—South Park! These Wednesday events were a highly anticipated for it was always a fine time. And whenever we confirmed plans with our co-host Matt and he’d say “Gary will be there, too” we were… agog! You see our conversations with Gary were always interesting, thought provoking, outrageous, sometimes agitating, but ultimately, incredibly funny. He was so opinionated, dark-humored, incessantly witty, and always acted BIG. We were always amazed that this little guy on a wheelchair was such a strong figure in our minds — not an impression most people leave us with.

Having grown hugely fond of him, we would often bug Gary to attend a potluck in our apartment and swore to carry him and his wheelchair up 1 and 1/2 flights of stairs. But alas, before the little guy could make it — we lost him…

Post-mortem
To read Gary’s biography is like opening a box of precious jewels we never knew we had. We didn’t know he was such a pioneer in his field, didn’t know he was an accomplished journalist, didn’t know he was a “mover and shaker,” or that he acted in a film! We had no clue as to the genius that he was. We just loved and respected him for the guy he was from Day 1.

Gary, we will miss YOU so much — your laughter, your wit, your sarcasm, your humor, your dirty mind =) and most of all, we will miss looking forward to your presence at the dinner table… We’ll set a place for you.
